Images for Episode 135: "Whit MacLaughlin Finds His Utopia"

Above: In a July 1978 photo from the Bloomsburg PA Morning Press, a young Whit MacLaughlin plays Cleante to John Chism's Tartuffe in the newly-founded Bloomsburg Ensemble Theatre' production of Moliere's classic comedyTartuffe.

Below: In another photo from the local paper, Whit was shown taking an acting class with the teacher Alvina Krause.

Occasionally, Whit and other members of the young company would perform as street fairs in nearby Wilkes-Barre, PA:

Whit's beard - atypical for French mime work - is evidently explained because at the same time he was performing in a BTE production of Chekhov's Three Sisters:

April 1982, the company was ready to move into its newly-renovated home, a converted moved house, which was later to be renamed the Alvina Krause Theatre:

During the 1980s, Whit was both a co-maonager and a mainstay of the acting company, playing such roles as the fool Feste in Twelfth Night (left), Scrooge in A Christmas Carol (center), and in his own devised work Ta-Ra-Ra-Boom-De-Ay (right).

By the mid 1990s, MacLaughlin was pursuing his MFA at Virginia Tech, and forming his troupe of actors, New Paradise Labs. A few years later, a photo of the young troupe appeared in the Phialdelphia Inquirer, about their production of Frisch's Firebug.
